TORONTO – A baby boy who was the subject of an Amber Alert following the theft of a car in Toronto Sunday has been found safe.

The father of the three-month-old was visiting a flea market in the Albion Rd.-Hwy. 27 area around 3:45 p.m. when a man apparently took off with his vehicle and the child inside.

“He wasn’t the initial caller, there were others that said a car was stolen with a baby in the backseat,” Toronto Police Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook said.

“It appears that dad may have gone into another vehicle and attempted to follow it but lost it.”

Police announced at 7:30 p.m. the baby had been found with the vehicle, a 1997 grey, four-door Camry. They said the abductor was still on the loose. A member of the public tipped the police off about spotting a baby in a car, they said.

The infant was unharmed and was reunited with his family.

The discovery followed a frantic search that led to an Amber Alert being issued and had a number of GTA police forces, as well as the OPP, on the lookout for the stolen vehicle.

Police were not ruling any motives for the theft in or out. Investigators were trying to determine whether the suspect even knew there was a baby in the back seat or whether he may have known the owner of the stolen car.

Police gave the search maximum publicity, with not only Toronto police but neighbouring forces flooding social media with descriptions of the car and the baby.

The abductor is described as white, 40-45 years old, 5-foot-11 with short blond hair and a medium build.
